Trying to make sub Seller customs categories.

Postby DiscerLes1 on Mon Jul 30, 2012 4:08 pm

Hi All

Still hitting my head against a brick wall trying to make the sub-category. Here is how I have the title for a Newfoundland stamp Newfoundland #79-Queen Victoria-1897-1901-MH-(Nfld) MH $3.00 1947 Nfld001.12.jpg GTE

I have tried to use Newfoundland as a sub-cat with no luck. It ends up in Worldwide. Next I tried Canada- Provinces and it ends up in Worldwide.

Has you can see I have used code1947 which is for Canada provinces. With you help maybe I can get it through my thick head what is going wrong.

Thank you any and all help given.

If you have not deleted and restarted the item, it might be entirely possible that the server "space" that houses that information for display just hasn't been refreshed. There have been examples of things that were changed, yet it seemed like it took forever for the change to "take".

If you take your current listing and try to edit it (completely disregarding the seller's custom categories, does it show Canada-> Provinces #1947 there?

It can take several hours from when you make changes to categories for the edits to appear.

Les, in the past I had a system that worked well until I got lazy and stopped using it ( ). I'd put special codes at the bottom of the description that I could reference to list something in one or more special seller categories.

For example, for a KG-V Silver Jubilee omnibus set, I used codes OMNIBC KGFIVE so that I could list this in the special category "omnibus stamp issues" and also in the special category "King George V Stamps"; just enable search for the description too. Also, make sure it isn't a common word used in your descriptions. I used KGFIVE and not KGV since I was concerned the latter might also pick up KGVI, for example. That worked fine.

As the others say, it takes a while to populate the search categories once you set them up.

You need to set up sub-categories in your store subscription page under the "sell" tab.

It appears when you listed Newfoundland you picked category worldwide which would explain why your stamps are going there. You will need to manually change the category to match the one you set up in your store subscription.

Once in store subscription scroll down to "Add a new category" Fill in the blanks.

1. Name: Newfoundland
2. Search For: - This can be any word or whatever you want - Let's say you want to use Newfoundland type that in the blank
3.Search Category: - Stamps, Canada, Provinces? or Other? You need to pick the appropriate category.
4. Search in Titles & Descriptions: - check that box.
5. Save your work.

The category "Newfoundland" will be at the bottom of your list on the right hand side. You need to drag it up to Canada and then to the right. Again, save.

Remember, if the category you choose is Stamps,Canada, other. All your listings must match. So again, you will need to edit the listings you have, manually, to that category.

Let me know if you need more help :D

Peter made a good point. If you "Search for" Newfoundland, any stamp with that word will appear in that category. So you might want to use "Nwflnd". Just be sure "nwflnd" appears in the description as a keyword or in the title.

I'd be careful about abbreviations; sometimes bidStart catches these, such as GB for Great Britain. Better to use something that is unique to your search term (I think another seller uses something like this; is it Doug? I can't remember).

I do. I use special terms like "elizabeth2" for Queen Elizabeth II, or "qvictoria" for Queen Victoria (so it's not confused with the Australian State), etc. I use them religiously (sans quote marks).

I also use "definitive" and "commemorative" and other such terms so I can filter by those, too (whether including, or excluding). For instance, a subcategory for "-definitive" should eliminate most all definitives from the search results. Same with "-CTO" to eliminate them. I'm not sure, though, how many customers actually use these custom categories and searches, so I don't know if I'm just wasting my time, or if people find them genuinely useful.

When using these, its important to chose the "Search Titles and Descriptions" toggle switch so it looks in the body of the descriptions.

Oh absolutely no worry about that. I've turned it into an Olympic sport and got gold every time. I was going to type more but ... you know.

All it shows is Canada Provinces. I wonder if I should put #1947 in there. That way is would like this Canada Provinces #1947.

Again thanks for your help.
