quick question re: Scott 2013 vol 4

Postby philatarium on Mon Jul 16, 2012 7:20 pm

Hi, all --

Does anyone already have in hand volume 4 of the new 2013 Scott? (released 7/3/12)

If so, could you look at that introductory statement from the editor about changes to the current volume and let me know what it says about Japan? I'm trying to determine how extensive (or not) their repricing of Japan might be for the 2013 volume.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!!

(Finally hope to be returning to Bidstart and selling again with the next few weeks!)

Hi Dave,

Thought mine would arrive today - no luck. Hopefully tomorrow.

Below is a short synopsis from the Amos page:

More than 19,000 value changes were recorded in this year’s edition. Leading the way was Kuwait with 2,123 changes. Other countries with substantial number of changes include Maldive Islands (2,053), Mozambique (1,897), Malta (1,518), Montserrat (1,200), Jamaica (1,073) and Mali (949).
Substantial increases of 20% or more can be found in several countries. Examples include Liberia from 2005-08 and Mozambique from 2000-04. Stamps from the classic period also continue to exhibit healthy gains.
On the editorial side, dozens of overprinted and surcharged stamps are now illustrated in color, in place of the verbal descriptions that once headlined the respective listings. With pictures to guide you, these stamps should be much easier to locate. Also, various black-and-white drawings of different type designs, some of which have been in the catalogue for decades, are now illustrated with actual stamps.

I would think if there was any significant increase/decrease in Japan, it would be included in that "blurb". If my catalogue arrives tomorrow, I will fill you in.

Maybe, Michel has his catalogue already.

Look forward to having you back :D

Hi, Jeri!

Thanks for replying! And thanks especially for finding that blurb from Amos. (I went looking for it earlier, but couldn't find it.)

I think you're right that if there was a significant re-pricing of Japan, then it would be mentioned. Otherwise, I've found that the big-ticket Japan items get repriced, but nearly everything else stays the same. The challenge is determining whether or not my offerings will be in the "nearly everything", or among the few small-ticket items that will get repriced.

For the first time ever, I did order the 2013 Japan pages from that seller who physically breaks down the catalogue. Those'll hopefully arrive in the next few days, but I wanted to get a rough idea of how extensive any price changes might be, and that full introduction for the volume is the best summary I know of.

Thanks for the kind wishes! I've missed the gang (and am especially missing some of those who are no longer here).

-- Dave

P.S. I'll still be checking to see when someone gets the volume in.

While you're at it (whoever it may be) I'm also curious how the values for Greece, the poster child for the Euro financial crisis, have fared.

I too am expecting my volume 4 any day now. It was shipped out last week.

I just finished Greece. There are some major increases on many issues. You will find the newer Europa issues (1970s onward), however have tanked.

India has some nice increases in the early issues, but the modern material is mostly down 25%. No changes at all in the India States.

British is simply soft and down across the board. However, Hong Kong did nicely. I was surprised at the huge increases in modern used minor variety definitives. There also were several surprises in Hungary.

Again, my perspective is based on the 2011 catalogs and the 2013 catalogs. I couldn't tell you if the increases/decreases were all in the 2013, only in the 2012 or a combination of both catalog editions. Also, my comments do not include the increase in the minimum value of a stamp.

Regarding the preamble comments in the Scott catalogs, they are not putting everything in there. I have found many value changes in countries that weren't even mentioned. Considering the number of issues affected, I would have thought they would have mentioned it.

I have not kept up with the posting I started for the 2013 catalog, because of my health issues I just haven't felt like posting all that much.

I am feeling much better as the severe anemia I had from the blood loss I sustained is definitely subsiding.
