What collectibles would you buy if you won the lottery?

Postby cocollectibles on Tue Jul 03, 2012 4:24 pm

Okay fellow collectors, just for fun. Hypothetical situation: If you won $10,000,000 (after taxes) in the lottery, what collectibles would you buy immediately?

Me? Some of those missing higher value Vickie stamps that punctuate my collection, especially a mint Hong Kong 96c olive bistre.

You?
Peter

In stamps: being a worldwide collector, whatever nice classic stamps were available at auction.
In comics: completing a run of 12c Action Comics, 12c Green Lantern, and Flaming Carrot.
Books: Scarf up on classic Gold Medal, Signet, Ballantine, and other paperbacks with cover art by the likes of Barrye Phillips, Rudolf Belarski, Robert Maguire, and Richard Powers.
Records: Buy a nice turntable and stock up on classic classical albums - Mercury Living Presence, RCA Shaded Dogs, London Blue Backs.
Baseball Cards: A Bowman 1953 Color set, and a Bowman 1955 "TV Set" set.
and last, but definitely not least, I may finally afford to place winning bids on some Bennettoons Cartoon Cachet covers. :D

I would bid on 100,000,000 Penny auctions and change my name to Kim.

Watch out Poppe your store will no longer have the largest number of items.

Just like Peter, I would fill 3 slots right away and they would be the St Louis Provisional,s or "Bears" . I might even go for some of the "Special Printings" or a Persian rug revenue.

What a question...after I really thought about all this, I'd bid on Dave's covers 'cause I love his artwork so much. Then complete my Australia collection. That is after all the bills were paid and the house is free and clear and two new vehicles and fixing all the stuff around the house. Okay, so I'm a realist while I play.

Great answers!

Of course, this would mean retirement too, so that means ... opening up a whole new area of collecting! The space stuff has started to intrigue me; there's a great site, www.collectspace.com and that's where I got the inspiration for this topic. I must say though, they have considerably more technical and expensive tastes than we have here!

I'd open my own online marketplace. Like feebay, but better. I'd call it "Bidstarter" or something like that. That way I could just monitor what everyone is posting for sale and get first crack at anything I wanted. I'd have my crack team of monitors looking for price typo errors in the listings so I could buy $10,000 items for $10.00. :D

Hey, an agreement to sell is an agreement to sell.
