Steal of a deal on a 356!

Postby larsdog on Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:54 pm

This is just sad:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/310407688378?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Funny how this seller constantly comes across items that COULD be legit, but they apparently don't bother sending off for a cert to see if it's worth over $1000 at least! Mighty nice of them to let the buyer MAYBE get a steal of a deal. But then again, MAYBE not!

Why are you surprised? I've seen these types of things from them over the years on a regular basis. They don't overdo it and probably offer a great money-back guarantee to prevent negative feedback, but all it takes is a few buyers that don't send off for a cert to make this kind of business worthwhile. I think any "maybe it is/maybe it isn't" auction like this should provide for reimbursed shipping both ways and at least 50% of the cert fees if the item is certified as a fake. That would motivate sellers to get certs first and mark fakes accordingly. This one (356) is a bit unusual since the CV is so high, but there are LOTS of fake 350 and 351 "coils" in the market. Caveat Emptor!

Lars,
I agree 100% just one buyer on an item like this that dose not get a cert and it makes it all worth it. Here's another prime example from NY http://www.ebay.com/itm/380448131131?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Perfect line pair. Also check out the Bullshiirt feedback rating 100% with 9 negatives and 54 neutrals how is that %100

Just look at those boardwalk margins at the top and bottom of that "guideline" pair. Now look at the top and bottom margins of the "356". :hmm:

Look at these, too:

Me thinks I smell something rotten in Denmark (to mix metaphors).

By eBay calculations, 99.95% = 100%, so if you have fewer than 5 complaints per 10,000 transactions, you are a 100% seller. Neutral doesn't count against you anymore, so by offering a full refund, even refunding shipping, makes it possible to offer such things without damaging your feedback. And even if you do get more than 5 per 10,000, you would have to get more than 1 negative per hundred to get lower than a 99% rating!

This seller usually has a variety of repaired dogs, outright fakes and mediocre genuine items in his revenue sales. That this coil is a fake does not surprise me in the least.

Ebay intimates that the APS keeps a check on listings?

Years ago there were some very knowledgeable people checking the stamp area on a regular basis, but eventually they got frustrated by all the red tape and lack of caring on the part of ebay. Stamps are very small potatoes to them and they really don't care about consistency; this is a big seller who has given ebay a lot of profits over the years and they are not going to do anything to upset him.
Some people still report fakes when they see them with limited success. My advice is never spend more than a small amount on ebay items unless you know the seller personally or can get legitimate informed opinions about him. Whatever small means to you, to me $100 or less, usually much less.

People still don't pay attention to "if it looks too good,it's probably not real. Greed gets in the way.

And it sold for $504! Being relatively new to philately, I believed NY stamps was legit. I have bought precancels from them. I'm disapointed - I thought they were reputable. It pays to read forums.

Guess I'll become a power seller over there too. All I have to do is get my scissors out and start trimming stamps into rarities. I'll even cut the heads off of statues. I'll offer the most rare and unique stamps available. Can't wait until I can buy an island in the Pacific and retire there!
