Need Help With This One

Postby jbtb1096 on Fri Apr 27, 2012 7:48 pm

I have looked through Austrian Occupation of Italy and other locations and have not been able to id this stamp. Does anyone know the Country and Scott number?

Thanks for your help,

Jim

Interesting. One would expect it to be in the Italy N1-N19 set, but it looks like the 1K (and the overprints) may not have been officially issued??

Jim
This is an Austrian Military Post stamp for military posts in Italy. However, as noted by noernberg, this stamp is not issued, albeit printed. Here is an internet link to a catalog of Austian Military Post stamps: http://catalogue.klaseboer.com/vol2/html/austrmil.htm . Scan down to the Military Posts in Italy section of this site and you will see a note about this stamp.
Hope this helps!

Thank you so much everyone. I have 3 of these stamps I found in my inventory box the other day. It's gonna be interesting to see how much each one will bring when I list the first one next week. But the best part is that Scott doesn't even list the 1K as being issued as far as I can tell.

Michel doesn't list or make mention of this stamp.

I am surprised Michel doesn't even list it. They almost always have everything ever issued that I have seen that Scott does not list.

I was surprised that there was not even a mention of it in a footnote.

This is Scott #N33. It's priced at $6.00 in my 2009 edition of Scott.

Scott doesn't give much help here as only this value in the set has this design. The other 13 have the smaller design also with a portrait of Emperor Karl that is shown in Scott. Here's the 5 heller value of the unoverprinted set:

In my old 1998/99 Michel Europa-Katalog West Jim's stamp is listed as unissued Mi XIV in the Issues for Italy section. It's priced at 5 marks mint only.

The original unoverprinted stamp is listed as unissued Mi XIV in the general issues (Allgemeine Ausgaben) section.

SG lists the stamp as SG 33 but states for both this set and the unoverprinted one that "The above issue was put in sale in Vienna a few days before the armistice, but was never in use by the armies." A similar note appears in Scott.

I don't have the latest SG Part 2 edition but in in 2002 it was priced at £2.50 mint.

Wow... how odd. Or maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Scott (2009) calls this N33 stamp illustrator #OS3 (which is the vertical Emperor Karl stamp as shown in your photo), and an olive green on greenish paper. I would call this bister or ochre before olive green, and clearly this is the OS2 design (vs. OS3).

Michael, would you take care of that for us, please?

SG describes this stamp as olive-bistre on blue.

All right. Nigel comes through!

I see it in Michel, and I saw it yesterday. The problem with the Michel listing is that it doesn't say that there is a different design. Michel calls the color: olive on greenish paper. Also, there is a warning about forged surcharges.
