I may be the only one left who likes open top mounts instead of the split-backs. Can't beat the open top mounts for ease of putting in or removing stamps. The only problem is stamps are more likely to shift in open top mounts. But I do use both! How's that for compromise?

I agree with the light finger application on the bottom end of the mount ~ if you are using your own "printed" paper album pages heavy licking will "bleed" through to the other side of the paper. Also the light application allows easier "re-placement" if you decide to rearrange your own "style" of album pages. The mount will easily lift off and not damage the paper.

My first album (was over 50 years ago) did indeed contain Crystal mounts and they did indeed "glaze" the stamps, but then that album went through several hurricanes  And even in the past 10 years my stamp room has had the A/C on continually and I have found the Crystal mounts still glazed the stamps ~ so don't! I know earlier in this post that some have had great success with them. They may be okay with used stamps but not MNH!

Even with used stamps, I have seen some used stamps that have developed mold spots. Just don't use the Crystal Mounts.

Even many regular album pages are very thin, and the moisture applied to the mount will seep to the other side.

cocollectibles wrote:Wow, who would have thought we'd be having a discussion on how to moisten mounts! Doug and Michael, I moisten the BOTTOM flap, not the top. I've always done that, as it is easier for me to remove the stamp if I want to exchange it with a newer or better copy. Otherwise, I'm more like Doug where I put a dab on the top mount though, to hold it in place.

How many MORE varieties can there be! :D

I moisten ONLY the top flap in a similar way, but I don't go QUITE to the top edge. It makes it easier to get a tong blade between the mount and the page from the top if I need to later remove the mount. I can generally use each mount twice if I need to.
