Trouble with groups

Postby mobarbq on Thu Nov 05, 2009 11:44 am

I'm having some trouble with making posts to groups.

1) Making a single topic, but it will show up several times, as several different posts. On the other hand, some posts (new topics) which gave me a message saying "topic created," then never show up at all. ?!

2) I keep getting a message when using IE to make posts, that my popup blocker is preventing full functionality of the insert image function. (won't let me insert an image) But, I don't have a pop-up blocker on, so that message is not making any sense. I seem to be able to use Firefox, but then of course, I can't cut and paste with Firefox, so it is much better for me to post with IE, when posting links, etc.

Anyone else reporting problems? I probably make more posts in groups than some others; see the Oceanographic group-that's the one where I have been having trouble. TNX

I'm of no help on the rest of your question, but perhaps I can help here. Help me understand this part of your post.

I think you can cut and paste in Firefox. At least, the way I understand cut and paste, I do that. So could you elaborate on that problem a little bit, and perhaps we can clear something up for you!

OK. I like to post links to other URLs within the body of the topic message.

This is my browser if I use Firefox: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 Firefox/3.5.4 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) (P.S. I just now cut and pasted that, so now I am really confused, maybe it is a problem with URLs?)

I usually have a second browser window open and go and click on the given URL and copy it. (since they are often very long addresses and it is simpler just to cut and paste than to have to retype a long URL) Then I go back to the forum topic window and right click to past, and I get a message saying that cut and paste is not available in Firefox, would I like more information on the topic? YES NO When you click on yes, It takes you to http://www.mozilla.org/editor/midasdemo ... prefs.html, which gives you a involved explanation of what you need to do to fix it. Sounded like a pain to me, so I just quit using Firefox and went back to IE instead.

Now I am getting multiple posts of the same topic, etc., have to go back and delete some of the extra messages if it will let me do that. It won't always let me delete either. If you look at my group you will see what I mean * Oceano

Well I meant to say that when I got the "no cut and paste" message when in Firefox, I would quit using Firefox and go to IE. But now that won't work because I am getting the new message on IE that my pop-up blocker is preventing me from using cut and paste, turn it off. [It's not on]

Am I doomed to having to write out on scrap paper those mile long URLs of news articles, etc? Help!

Wow -- I understand the problem you're describing, but have never heard of this happening before. Based not only on what you described here, but my own understanding and experience, it sounds like it's something else (like that anti-virus program) telling you you can't paste (or it gets Firefox to tell you it can't paste).

I'm not expecting you to get a different answer, but one can also paste via the Edit > Paste command up at the top, or also by just "control + v". (Copy would be "control + c".) Does either of these work for you? (I'm guessing they won't.)

I just Googled the phrase "can't paste in Firefox", and, ignoring the posts about early versions of Firefox, came upon this one:

http://www.technipages.com/cant-cutcopy ... refox.html

where there's a conflict with some of the add-ons. Be sure to read the comments, too.

And then here's the Google search result, in all its gory detail:

http://www.google.com/search?q=can%27t+ ... =firefox-a

I'll have to leave it to somebody who actually knows something (in contrast to my ruminations) to help get you past this point, unless that link about the Firefox add-ons fixes the problem.

Good luck with this, because it sure does seem thorny.

Just highlight the section you want to copy and use control-C to copy it, then use control-V to paste it; that works in the item description section of listings, and elsewhere. I have been able to use right-click/paste in the title of an item listing but not in the item description.

No, actually, that does work! I'm amazed at what makes the difference between right-clicking to copy and paste and using the control at the top of the page. So that is a fix for now. Still would like to know what is causing the multiple posts...

Well, that's good news! -- to at least have a workaround. But the whole matter is puzzling to me, who is just a driven user (wouldn't call me a power user), not an applications developer.

I haven't spent enough time in the groups to get any kind of feeling for your original question, but hopefully someone will mosey by here with some insights!

Progress -- in inches, rather than miles ...

All the best,

And then sometimes, we go backwards.

Today, the button that appeared right above the posts section of the main group page, for posting "new topic" is gone. There used to be an option for posting a new topic directly under the header. That section is gone also.

Maybe I've reached my limit on posts?

At 156 posts??? If that were true, kim and Michael#'s would have been toast long ago! Heck, if there were the same limits on changing avatars, kim would have been blocked!

Well, I've been able to make some more posts, using the "workaround," but it is still weird getting several posts showing up when I just make one. I don't get it. It acts as if it has a mind of its own, if one post is good, several of the same one would be better.

I have been going in and deleting the ones it will let me delete.
