As I have said before, a Seller should show both sides of the stamp AND describe the fault(s) if any!! At that other place, hardly anyone describes faults. They either show both sides(OK if you can see it well) or show the front without comment. If I need the stamp I question the Seller. A PICTURE is not necesarily worth 1000 words! Repairs, thins, wrong watermarks, etc ,etc, so forth can't be seen in a picture, necessitating a DESCRIPTION.

richd4549 wrote:You must also remember pencil markings was a common and accepted practice , not so long ago. So many older stamps may have pencil marks. Again in IMHO, as long as it does not affect the front of the stamp it is no big deal. After all, as stated early on in this thread we do not mount our stamps face down. This all my 2 cents worth on this subject.

I would agree with Rich on this, except when I got this item in an auction I won with several Victoria stamps. Okay, fairly large lot and the usual disclaimers about quality, but why would ANYONE do this? The front is not affected, but now, I will always know the back looks like this.

So, do you return this one stamp, the whole lot, keep it? I'm going to keep it.

Well that's the strange thing; there is no "crownland / crown CA" watermark as far as I know. Watermark Crown CA is WM2 in Scott. I am waiting for my Clarity resupply before I can tell.

Is it at least in pencil where you can take a mechanical eraser and get rid of that crap?

I believe it is in pencil, but it looks like it was etched in with some pressure. Ever seen "crownland" on a watermark?

No, I've never seen someone do that to a stamp. I wonder if they drew that and used the backside as a watermark reference tool.

I have never heard of a crownland WM. Now the crown over CA is definitely a given...Not sure that is a removeable marking. Not sure the value of the stamp, but if valuable, I might not want to try and remove it.

Not valuable; only $1.75 used and $4 unused (2009 Scott). It isn't pencil, it is ball point pen ink. Uggghhhh!

Do not remove!!  Yes, sharpie attack. Well, again, we mount with front forward...hmmm. If for sale, disclose with pic front and back. But, someone still needs to weigh in on the crownland issue???

No, not for sale; I tend to forgive things in my own collection, but not in the stuff I sell. I would not sell something like this except as a novelty item maybe.

Kind of reminds me of the Freedom from Hunger Sets i purchased all stamped in ink with the owners name and APS number. I guess he wanted to be able to identify them if they were ever stolen.

I wonder...maybe the person that placed the overdrawn design put 'crownland' over the top of the WM to show reference to type of WM from 'crown' colonies 'land'...hmmm

Interesting thought, eagle!

I have a couple of mint copies and both have Crown CA watermarks in the same position as this one, but neither has the crownland on top. When I get my Clarity this week, I'll check this stamp. I really need a Signoscope!!
