I still feel that we need to get more kids envolved in collection. I have a friend who has a brick and motar store. He says no. We need more adults interested. They have the money. Kids don't. I really don't agree with this. When I sas a kid I always had a job of somekind and used some of my money for stamps and coins. Gave the rest to my Dad for food or bills. Maybe I'm too old fashioned.

I agree. Get the kids involved when they are young. Parents should participate with the kids. If it catches hold, then they'll remember it later on if they don't keep with it through childhood. If not, well, there's always video games.

I have two boys. With MEG, he's into the stamps. HE started with model railroading, likes it, but is not much into making models. The other boy likes model making. He has kept a small piece of his stamp collection, but sold the rest. He likes stamps, but doesn't like working on them. I guess that's OK as each boy likes one of my two main passions.

cocollectibles and I have been bouncing around the idea of starting a stamp club. I have a grade school, middle school and a high school a stone thows down the street from me. That's why I want to move. Traffic is terrible in the morning and the evening.

Stamp.

Sandy, I still have visions of you sitting at the table with the kids at the show in Marietta. I hope you and Peter really do start a club. It opens up a whole new world of opportunities. At the one I go to this very discussion comes up and I agree with Michael ~ its up to the parents ~ and grandparents, which is why I'm going hog-wild in collecting birds for my youngest granddaughter who is the bird afficiando. One never knows if that will catch on or not.

I went to the Sarasota Stamp Show this past Saturday and the turn out was not all that great, but that could be because of the snowbirds holding off coming down until after the election. I saw no kids there at all but the previous year there were a couple! I did contribute to the bin, hopefully some showed up on Sunday.

There are some folks who believe that Philately, as we know it ,will end once adhesive stamps are gone.

I disagree. A good comparision would be the collecting of Ancient Coins. Ancient Coin collecting is doing quite well worldwide. Probably more collectors now then ever before. It has been 1500 years since the last ancient coin was minted.

The only major change that we will see, is that people will be able to spend all of their money on what has been issued, rather than quite a bit of it on new issues. TedL.

Sadly, Sandy's brick and mortar store friend is correct as well. We gotta have the parents, they have the $$. Back in the day, we could work as teenagers...my first "real" job was pumping gas...at 14...(that's when I rode my bike about 4 miles a day...and about 50 pounds ago).

Most of my income was disposable at that time...then came cars and girls (that's a different discussion...maybe not on this site)...

My point is, that with all the worry about liability and the way that an employer can work teenagers (at least in Michigan) few businesses hire them these days. Then begins the catch 22 of being 18 and needing the experience to get the job but not being able to get it...

So...if mom and dad put the $60.00 a game into the stamps...well the hobby would probably experience another "boom".

You started out right with the "Sadly" as down here in SW Fla $60 is a biggie. Lots of people getting foreclosed on, losing their jobs, the market sucks right now and I don't believe parents are going to shell out money for stamps when they need to shell it out for housing and food... and from what I see on the tube, its that way in other states as well.

It is indeed sad, the state of affairs...even in our little Isle it has effected the neighbor, she rented, but the landlord has been foreclosed on.

Hopefully everyone has gotten out to vote (or via absentee) in this historical election. It is, in one way or another an historical event...unless it is not a Democrat or Republican that gets in...

I'm also afraid that once this election is over gasoline "and all" will bounce back where they were...(I'm afraid a lot...nervous as a long tailed cat in a roomful of rockingchairs :hmm: )

If I remember correctly, Sandy is in Georgia. First time I drove through Georgia, I noticed that the gas was markedly cheaper when I passed the state line; turns out they don't have a state sales tax on gasoline. I'm guessing maybe that is still true. You live in Florida and I live in Texas; we both have the sales tax on gasoline.

However, even with the additional gasoline sales tax, gas is cheaper in Central Texas and along the Gulf Coast. In San Antonio and Houston, the gas is in the low $1.90s per gallon. It's been consistently under $2 for the last 2 weeks.

I just paid $2.06 for my last tank.

Can you post that pic of me and the kids that you mentioned, I haven't got a copy

Thought you said you had a pic, not that you can vision me working with kids. At one point in my life I had a cub scout troup, a boy scout troup, a 4-H club and girls softball team. We came in 3rd in the state. I have always found that people who say they don't have time are the ones that always seem to help another kid. or kidds. Had about 12 of them at one time too.

Sandy lives in the outback of Metro Atlanta ( ) so his gas prices are lower; I'm "inside the perimeter" as we say here, so the cheapest I can find is $2.26; usually you'd think the metro stations would be lower, and prices higher in the less urban areas, but not here.

The lowest in Central Texas is $1.99, but it went up to $2.12 today. Well, our new president already said what he intends to do about energy. Make it too expensive for us to use so that our overall use drops in percenttage proportion to the rest of the world. We're going to be third world. Upper and lower classes only. We'll be working for the government.
