SG Values for Machins

Postby lokos on Fri Aug 14, 2009 9:58 am

Hello All

I was wondering if anyone that had a Stanley Gibbons newer than the 2006 Concise would mind doing a check on a few machins for me. I'm just trying to get a feel for whether the prices had changed much in the last couple of years or if they're just staying about the same. Hopefully they haven't changed the numbers around. I included the values from the 2006.

Thanks for taking the time to check them out for me,
Rick

Rick -

Checked them against the current GB Specialized Volume 4 - no price changes.

Hi Rick,

All the prices are the same in the 2009 Concise as well.

Thank you both for checking, appreciate it.
I wasn't sure with all of the price changes that Scott has done over the last year or two if there would something similar in changes with SG.

Thanks again,
Rick

As a keen Machin collector ( albeit used ) I have to say that SG is not the catalogue to use - stamps are overpriced well beyond the usual SG margin - and even the specialised is not specialised enough.

The best catalogue is Deegam - or as a second choice Connoisseur. I don't have an updated one of either, but as far as value is concerned that is not important to me as they only list values for mint - but Deegam is essential for proper ID it lists seperately sheet, booklet and coil varieties of each stamp ( with tips on how to identify them) and all the different band varieties, and different phosphor/flourescent paper recipes. These can make an immense difference to the "actual" value of the stamp.

The only advantage to Gibbons Specialised is that it lists constant plate flaws, although most Machin collectors don't collect these anyway.

Malcolm, what do you think of the Stoneham catalogue? Its section on Machins was written by the Machin Study group (or whatever the name is, sorry I don't have it handy).
