Japan Unlisted Souvenir Sheet

Postby levasseur on Thu Nov 05, 2009 9:01 pm

Can anyone identify this mint souvenir sheet?
I can't find it in Scotts nor could I find any like this for sale.

This is not a postal issue, but, basically, a cinderella, issued to celebrate the centenary of the first Japanese postage stamps.

I think if you look on the back, it might have some writing positioned to coincide with the reverse of each stamp that roughly says "reproduction", if I'm recalling correctly.

Several types of reproductions have been issued over the years; most are of a modest value (say, $3-5/sheet, ballpark), but one of them has quite a bit of value. I'm not where my catalogs are, but I'll double-check later on, and let you know if this might be the one that has the higher value.

Hope that's helpful!

Thanks Dave-
The back is blank-no writing whatsoever.
I'm surprised I couldn't find any on E-bay or Delcampe. Perhaps for a Stamp Expo?

Richard -- That might be the first one, then, although I need to double-check.

I don't know if PhilaNippon was around in 1971, but the really big once-a-decade stamp show in Japan is in years that end in 1, so yours is a good guess. (And it certainly reflects that stamp centenary.) And it might well have started in 1971, in honor of the centenary.

I'll check back once I get the right catalog in my hands. (These are not listed in the Sakura or Japan Specialized catalogs.)

The bottom stamp block is Manchukuo Scott #135 (issued Sep 10, 1940, if you're following along in a different catalog). The 2007 Scott values a single mint stamp at $0.30.

Maybe what's next is the Japanese Occupation series ...

Good job, Peter!

Who knew that, come November, the days get shorter, the temps get cooler, and the Japanese (and J Empire) stamps come out.

Ah, the seasons of philately!

Actually, you had an extra hour that day. Glad you put it to good use (on SW, of course)!
