What publications do you subscribe to?

Postby dianealthea on Fri Apr 06, 2012 9:20 am

I know there are a lot of books and magazines out in the world. Some are great, some are okay and some are just a waste of money.

I'd like to know what magazines you subscribe to and do you think they are a great source of information or just a waste and you can't wait to stop receiving them.

Currently I have Linn's and I'm finding that one to be wonderful. I'm open to others, but have no idea which ones are better. Or do I have the cream of the crop right now?

Opinions?

Gibbons Stamp Monthly Online. At about $20 for a one-year subscription, it's a good deal, especially the first yer, because you get access to the archives of the previous 12 months' issues included.

Ted,

Thanks for the link. Often I have wondered where to find information about Gibbons stamp numbering when I couldn't find the stamp in the Scott's stamp books.

Which brings up yet another question; often I have researched a stamp to find a Gibbons number, but can not find it in the Scott's book, why is this?

Hi Diane,

Yes, Linn's is very good. I look forward to the arrival of every issue each week, too.

For what it's worth, I believe that another superb publication that you should consider
is, The American Philatelist. It is the monthly publication of the American Philatelic
Society (APS) and, it is part of your annual membership once you've joined the APS.
You can check it out at http://www.stamps.org.

Catalog makers have their own criteria for what to include in their catalogs, with each having specialties, such as Scott for US, Gibbons for British, Michel for Germany, etc. There are plenty of examples of stamps listed in one catalog and not the other. No catalog publisher will list another publisher's catalog numbers. Each numbering system is proprietary to that publisher.

Hi Luree,

If you ever need SG numbers or descriptions I'd be happy to try and help. :D

I have all the SG foreign catalogues (apart from the three Africa Since Independence volumes which haven't been updated since the 1980s), the SG Part 1 covering the Commonwealth up to 1990, the SG simplified Stamps of the World and some others.

The National Philatelic Society http://www.ukphilately.org.uk/nps/index.htm, of Great Britain, has an introductory membership offer.
One year for an overseas membership is 15GBP, or about $24 US. They have a bi-monthly magazine called "The Stamp Lover."
You can download (or read online), a sample copy here: http://www.ukphilately.org.uk/nps/lover/Stamp%20Lover%20June%202010a.pdf

But, wait! That's not all. "Stamp News Australasia" (the world's most exciting stamp magazine -- it says so, right there, on the cover) has back issues available online for FREE!!!
You can find them . . . . . . . HERE >>> http://www.stampnews.com.au/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3&Itemid=2

He probably picked it up from his kindred spirit, Bill O'Reilly.
