This week in Linn's.

Postby youpiao on Mon Jul 02, 2012 4:35 pm

My letter to the editor appears in the new issue of Linn's which came out online today. It is a reaction to a letter in last week's issue from a man who said he would write to the USPS in protest of their new policy to issue uncut press sheets for all commemoratives. His complaint was that he could not afford this latest affront to his collecting budget and would cease collecting US stamps. His argument is, of course, patently absurd, and I minced no words in saying what I thought about what he thought.

Only one slight problem. Linn's discombobulated my last sentence. I just checked my "sent mail," and I did not include that "more than" in the sentence. :?

OK, I can view it online, and I'll get it next week with the print version. The letter you responded to is in the July 7 issue. That's why I was wondering how you could have responded to a letter that was in the current issue. I didn't know that Linns online ran a week ahead of the print version.

I think they did that to help you save face -- the USPS doesn't currently offer any '1,000 stamp coils' ( just 100, 3,000 or 10,000).

10,000?
An obvious money-grab by the USPS.
Think of all the collectors forced to shell out $4499.55 extra, so they can have an example of every form of each issue.

The 'big roll' stamps are indistinguishable on the face from the others --- and can be purchased in strips of ten by any collector.

 Come on -- the point I was trying to make is that LINN's edited your wording so you wouldn't get a lot of nitpickers like me writing to point out your error!

"toons, I'm not arguing with you. My point is the same as yours. The stamps on the press sheets are the same as those on the panes available over the counter. I don't think there are many collectors who feel their collection is incomplete unless they have a 10,000 stamp roll intact, with leader and trailer.

What I'm annoyed about is the news in Linn's that the imperf uncut press baseball 4-player sheet all sold out before they went on sale. Was this another scam like the duck stamp one where one dealer got them all and now to get the imperf it's going to cost $100? Nice work there.

Check the rest of the story :

The USPS destroyed the entire first run of 1000 press sheets and now - in direct contradiction of their initial announcement - they are putting 2500 sheets up for purchase!

Very glad to hear that. I only got that in Linn's yesterday so apparently I'm in a time warp of some sort. Kind of like how my old home town is just now getting The Beatles.

I have to agree with Ted, and then Dave, in that order.

1) Ted - your point about collectors trying to tell USPS what to release in what format is like the tail wagging the dog. I could not agree more. It reminds me of when people complained about not being able to soak self-adhesive stamps.

2) Dave - you're right, Linn's saved Ted some face. He just won't admit it.
