I have had some cautious success with StampLift fluid (I know, many here don't like it). If the tape is not too old and therefore has not discolored the stamp, this works. You dab a LITTLE on the tape, and in a few seconds you should be able to slide it off. If it is a used stamp, you can try to soak it to clean off the bit of residue the product leaves behind (a bit oily feel; that's why I say "cautious success").

In my experience, it is almost impossible without damaging the tape. :(

Bob, if it's a common stamp, the best thing to do is throw it away. The chemicals in the tape will eventually ruin the stamp, if it hasn't been ruined already.

Also, unless the chemicals are neutralized, you run the risk of spreading the staining.

Lighter fluid will often work, but not always. Any staining is permanent, but the lighter fluid will usually not spread it around. To a large degree it depends on the exact age and brand of tape.

I have had good experience removing cellophane and other types of tape with lighter fluid as long as it was not stained. Some tape will leave a sticky residue. You then have to soak and gently roll it off. Not always successful. wall paper remover works too, this can also remove adhesive from adhesive backed stamps. If a cheap stamp don't waste your time, throw it out .
