1) Saving Animals Through Selling Stamps a StampWants Seller's Story
What do stamps and rescuing animals have in common? To most of us, nothing. But for one philatelist, selling stamps on StampWants acts as a conduit in raising money for animals in need.
StampWants member Barry Tuddenham (username barryt) of Ontario, Canada, has been raising money for animal shelters, humane societies, and charities for the past 12 years. But this is the first year that he is doing it by selling stamps.
Before turning to stamps, he created and sold animal-shaped concrete statues, some of which were over 200 pounds.
I used to joke every time I hoisted a mold full of concrete...that I should have gone into stamps, he said. Why not? Easy to ship, and how hard could it be?
Tuddenham said he soon found out how incredibly complex the world of stamps is. By studying for 12-16 hours a day, and with help from people in a nearby stamp store, he said he has learned a fair amount about Canadian stamps.
Currently, all of his profits are going to the feral cat spay/neuter program run by the charity Cats Anonymous. His goal is to raise $6,000 this summer. After that, he said he plans to raise money for a dog rescue.
Why animals? Tuddenham said he was born an animal lover. My parents were great animal lovers, I guess they passed it on, he said. We always had pets around. After seeing the appalling conditions the stray cats and dogs in his small town were living in, he decided to fight and make changes. When he retired seven years later, he dedicated his life to helping animals.
Tuddenham has been a StampWants member for almost two months and has already sold about 1,500 items. We want to grow as StampWants grows, and will be offering an amazing amount of stock - starting at 1 cent in the vast majority of cases, he said.
He he is planning on building a store selection on StampWants as well. We hope to build a large following, he said. Where else can a stamp collector get such bargains and help save lives at the same time?
