January 1, 2012 Auction Listing Fee Reminder
Just a quick reminder, that our auction listing fee policy for non-store items changed as of January 1, 2012. This change affected approximately 2% of our sellers, and only applies to sellers with very low auction sell through rates (selling less than 1 in 20 auctions listed). For those sellers that were effected, there are many different options to avoid any additional fees, and as a bonus - increase sales. Throughout January, we worked directly with our existing sellers who had not yet made appropriate changes, as well as waived certain fees during this time.
If you list a large amount of auctions, or plan to list a large amount of auctions, and have a low auction sell through rate, please ensure that you're familiar with these changes, and why they were made. Most likely you are already familiar with these changes, and if you're a seller we've likely contacted you directly. Again, here is an overview of these changes:
As of January 1, 2012, our listing fees for auction and non-store items were changed to be 50 free per month, followed by a 2¢ listing fee for each item after the first 50, if your sell through rate on auctions was under 5% (you sold less than 1 in 20 auctions). This does not apply to store items, which remain free to list regardless of if you have 100 items or 100,000 items.
The main reason for this change was not to increase fees, but to ensure sellers used the auction format properly. In general, if you are listing hundreds of items at the same price, over and over again each week, and they are not selling - these are not items which should be listed as auction items. Instead, you should list these items as store items. Store items are listed at a fixed price and remain listed until sold - or you end them. Auction items should be items which are listed at attractive opening bids, to encourage bidding.
Once you've reached the 50 free auction limit per month, if you don't meet the 5% threshold, a permanent information banner is displayed at the top of the My bidStart Selling sections, to ensure that you are aware of the fee being charge to you. Any applicable fees are also shown to you when you create your item listings.
Listing items with the correct listing formats will not only ensure you avoid any additional listing fees, but help to increase your sales. This also helps to ensure that items listed at auction, are appropriate for auction listings, which ensures that true auction items are not lost among items simply being relisted multiple times at starting prices which are actually retail prices or higher.
As always, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to email us back.
