1) Category Tag Clouds on StampWants - See What's Popular in Specific Categories
Last week we announced that Category Tag Clouds had come to StampWants.com. We'd like to take this time to go over what tag clouds are, and how they can help you find stamps on StampWants.com.
Wikipedia defines a tag cloud as:
"A tag cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of user-generated tags used typically to describe the content of web sites. Tags are usually single words and are typically listed alphabetically, and the importance of a tag is shown with font size or color. Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. The tags are usually hyperlinks that lead to a collection of items that are associated with a tag."
On StampWants.com the tags we display are based on the items within a category, and extracted from the words in the titles of those items. When browsing a category the 35 most popular tags are presented in a tag cloud (on the left hand side of the screen). The benefit of this is to allow an additional way to break a category down and browse the items within. While sub-categories do work well to help you browse StampWants.com, they are relatively fixed (we don't change the category structure too often) and try not to overlap each other. Tags within a cloud however, are dynamic and can change throughout the day, and quickly adapt to the trends within a category.
Tags allow you to browse items within a category in ways you may not have thought of before. They also serve to add an additional level of fine tuning past the last sub-category level in any given category. For example, currently (though we plan on changing this soon) there are no sub-categories in the Africa category. While you can easily search for any African country, the tag cloud can serve as a pseudo sub-category list, allowing you to easily view which countries in Africa have the most listings on StampWants.com. This is possible because each country becomes a tag and the more listings for a particular country, the more popular that tag becomes.
We hope this new feature helps you find exactly what you are looking for, and perhaps more importantly, allows you to find what you weren't looking for, but wanted all along.
